A widely circulated narration states that Imām al-Shāfiʿī (رحمه الله) said:
“Indeed, I seek blessings through Abū Ḥanīfah and I come to his grave every day, meaning as a visitor. Whenever I have a need, I pray two rakʿahs, then come to his grave and ask Allah for my need there, and it is not long before it is fulfilled.”

The Popular Claim
A widely circulated narration states that Imām al-Shāfiʿī (رحمه الله) said:
“Indeed, I seek blessings through Abū Ḥanīfah and I come to his grave every day, meaning as a visitor. Whenever I have a need, I pray two rakʿahs, then come to his grave and ask Allah for my need there, and it is not long before it is fulfilled.”

Chain Analysis
Chain: Makram ibn Aḥmad → ʿUmar ibn Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm → ʿAlī ibn Maymūn → “I heard al-Shāfiʿī…”
- The narrator ʿUmar ibn Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm:
- No biographical entry in reliable works.
- Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمه الله) declared him unknown (majhūl) (al-Silsilah al-Ḍaʿīfah, 1/31, ḥadīth no. 22).
Ruling:
- This narrator’s unknown status renders the entire report rejected (mardūd).
Promotion of a Rejected Report
Some later authors quoted it in their works, such as:
- Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Ṣāliḥī al-Shāfiʿī (ʿUqūd al-Jumān, Arabic p. 363; Urdu p. 440)
- Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī (al-Khayrāt al-Ḥisān fī Manāqib al-Nuʿmān, Arabic p. 94; Urdu p. 255)
However:
- They merely transmitted it without proving the narrator’s reliability.
- This indicates poor verification standards, especially when using mardūd narrations to support claims.
Another Unsupported Story
Some narrate that Imām al-Shāfiʿī prayed Fajr near Abū Ḥanīfah’s grave without reciting Qunūt, explaining:
“Out of respect for the one in this grave, I did not recite Qunūt.”
- Cited by al-Abshīṭī, ʿUqūd al-Jumān (p. 363), al-Khayrāt al-Ḥisān (p. 94), Tadhkirat al-Nuʿmān (pp. 440–441), Sartāj al-Muḥaddithīn (p. 255).
- Problem: Entirely without a chain; hence fabricated (mawḍūʿ).
Further Baseless Reports
- Muḥyī al-Dīn al-Qurashī in Ṭabaqāt cites an isnād-less claim about Imām al-Shāfiʿī lowering his voice in Basmala near Abū Ḥanīfah’s grave.
- Being chainless, such reports are invalid.
Position of Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله)
In Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-Mustaqīm (pp. 343–344; other edition pp. 385–386), he refutes the grave-visit story with:
- Ḥadīth-based evidence
- Rational arguments
Requirement for Authenticity
Anyone asserting these stories must:
- Produce a sound, connected chain of transmission.
- Citing a book name alone is not proof.
Authentic Statements of Imām al-Shāfiʿī on Imām Abū Ḥanīfah
- No authentic praise from al-Shāfiʿī about Abū Ḥanīfah is established.
- On the contrary, authentic chains exist for al-Shāfiʿī’s criticism of Abū Ḥanīfah.
Sources:
- Ādāb al-Shāfiʿī wa-Manāqibuh by Ibn Abī Ḥātim (pp. 171–172 – ṣaḥīḥ isnād; pp. 201–202 – ṣaḥīḥ isnād)
- Tārīkh Baghdād (13/437 – ṣaḥīḥ isnād; 2/177–178 – ṣaḥīḥ isnād)
Conclusion
- There is no authentic report that Imām al-Shāfiʿī visited the grave of Imām Abū Ḥanīfah.
- The circulated stories are fabricated or extremely weak.
- Any reliance on them is baseless according to the principles of ḥadīth.
