Introduction to the Companions Who Taught the Prophet’s ﷺ Method of Prayer: Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī and Others

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

Someone challenged a friend to prove the complete method of prayer from a single Hadith. The friend cited the narration of Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī رضي الله عنه from Sunan Abū Dāwūd, in which he taught prayer to ten companions. The challenger then demanded to know the biographies of Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī and the companions he instructed. He also asked for the background of Mālik ibn Ḥuwayrith and Abū Maḥdhūrah.

❀ Answer:

✦ The demand to prove the entire prayer from a single Hadith is fundamentally flawed and baseless.
This is akin to asking for the complete prayer from a single verse of the Qur’an, which is not possible. Just as the full structure of prayer is not contained in any one verse, it is not contained in any one Hadith either. Rather, the rulings and structure of prayer are derived from multiple verses and narrations scattered throughout the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Regarding the Hadith of Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī—while it is a detailed narration on the Prophet’s ﷺ prayer—it does not contain all aspects of Salah. Therefore, this demand should be rejected on the basis that no single source (verse or Hadith) encompasses all elements of Salah.

✿ Introduction to Key Companions:

  • Full name: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿd al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī.
  • His kunyah "Abū Ḥumayd" is more commonly known than his name.
  • A number of narrators have transmitted Hadith from him.
  • He passed away during the later years of Muʿāwiyah’s رضي الله عنه caliphate.

◈ Among the Ten Companions He Taught:

One of them was:
  • Name: Ḥārith ibn Ribʿī al-Anṣārī.
  • A renowned horseman of the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Passed away in 54 AH in Madīnah, although some reports claim he died in Kūfah during the caliphate of ʿAlī رضي الله عنه, having participated in all major battles.
  • Known for his kunyah overtaking his given name in recognition.
  • "Ribʿī" is pronounced with kasrah on rāʾ, sukūn on bāʾ, and kasrah on ʿayn.

✿ Additional Companions Related to the Teaching of Salah:

  • Name: Mālik, son of Ḥuwayrith, from the Layth clan.
  • Visited the Prophet ﷺ and stayed for twenty days.
  • Later resided in Baṣrah.
  • His narrations were reported by his son ʿAbdullāh, Abū Qilābah, and others.
  • Died in 94 AH in Baṣrah.
  • Full name: Samurah ibn Maʿburah, with some stating Aws ibn Muʿayr.
  • Served as the Mu’adhdhin of Makkah, appointed by the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Did not migrate and remained in Makkah until his death.
  • Died in 59 AH.

✔ Summary:

① The claim to produce the complete Salah from one Hadith is baseless and irrational.
② The method of prayer is compiled from various verses and narrations.
Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī and his contemporaries were reliable narrators, and the narration in Abū Dāwūd is highly significant but not all-encompassing.
④ The biographies of key companions confirm their authority and role in preserving the Sunnah.
Wallāhu Aʿlam.
