Intention at the Time of Slaughtering Animals in Islam

Should One Make Intention (Niyyah) While Slaughtering an Animal?

Taken from: Fatāwā Amanpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amanpuri

❖ Question:

Is it necessary to make intention (niyyah) while slaughtering an animal?

❖ Answer:

Slaughtering (dhabh) is an act of worship, and for every act of worship, intention is a condition. Therefore, at the time of slaughtering, one must have the intention that the animal is being slaughtered in the name of Allah.

◈ Scholarly Consensus

Allamah Ibn al-‘Arabi رحمه الله (543H) stated:
هي فرض بإجماع الأمة

It is obligatory by the consensus of the Ummah (to make intention at the time of slaughter).
(al-Masalik fi Sharh Muwatta’ Malik, 5/203)
