Innovations Concerning Muharram

① Status of Muharram

Muharram is one of the four sacred months. Engaging in warfare during this month is prohibited, unless disbelievers initiate hostilities against Muslims; in such a case, Muslims may defend themselves fully.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1742)

② Misconception Regarding Marriage

It is commonly believed by some that “one should not contract marriage in Muharram.” However, there is no basis for this in Sharīʿah.

③ Visiting and Renovating Graves

Specifically:
Visiting cemeteries,
Applying plaster to graves, or
Renovating them
only
in Muharram has no proof in the Book or Sunnah.

Note: Remembering death, praying for the deceased, and visiting graves at any time is permissible, provided all innovative practices are completely avoided.

④ Wearing Black as a Garment of Mourning

Wearing black in Muharram and labeling it as the “garment of grief” has no support from the Qur’ān or Sunnah.

⑤ Mourning Rituals for Ḥusayn’s Martyrdom

On 10 Muḥarram 61 AH, Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه was tragically martyred in Karbala. The following actions upon his martyrdom are prohibited:
① Wailing loudly
② Chest-beating
③ Lamentation (wailing)
④ Tearing garments
⑤ Beating oneself

Conclusion
Muharram’s sanctity must be upheld by adhering strictly to the Qur’ān and Sunnah, and by avoiding all forms of bidʿah.
