Incident of a Companion and His Wife with a Single Sheet of Cloth

Compiled by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid (Hafidhahullah)
He narrates this story in his sermons.

It is related about a Companion (رضي الله عنه) that he would immediately return home after offering the Maghrib prayer. Observing this, the other Companions (رضي الله عنهم) mentioned this to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), saying: “O Messenger of Allah, this Companion quickly leaves for home every day.” The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) inquired about it, and the Companion explained:

“I and my wife own only one piece of cloth. We both use it to perform Salah. When I bring the cloth to the mosque, my wife remains at home in an uncovered state. That is why I quickly return home after Maghrib, as its time is short. I give the cloth to my wife so she can also perform her prayer.”

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) then remarked:

“If anyone wishes to see a couple from Paradise, let them look at this couple.”

Later, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) gifted them some camels. When the Companion returned home, his wife said, “Either keep me with you or keep these camels.” The Companion decided to return the camels and chose to remain with his wife.

This story was narrated by Qari Abdul Hafeez Faisalabadi in one of his recorded sermons.

Analysis of the Narration

Upon investigation, no chain of transmission or evidence for this narration has been found in any authentic book of Hadith. The wording and nature of the story suggest that it is fabricated (موضوع) and baseless (بے اصل).
