In which journey can one break the fast?

Question:.

What kind of journey allows for breaking the fast?

Fatwa:.

A journey in which it is permissible to break the fast and shorten the prayer should be at least approximately 83 kilometers, although some scholars believe there is no fixed distance for travel, and any journey that is considered travel by people falls under this ruling. When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, undertook a journey of three farsakh, approximately nine miles long, he would shorten the prayer. However, it is not permissible to shorten the prayer or break the fast for a journey undertaken for a forbidden purpose, as such a journey is not suitable for obtaining a concession in a religious matter. However, some scholars do not distinguish between permissible and impermissible journeys based on general evidence.
