Important Rulings and the Sunnah Method of Wudu

➊ Washing Wudu Limbs Once, Twice, or Thrice

Sayyiduna Anas bin Mālik رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ requested water for ablution. He then:

  • Washed his face, hands, and feet once and said:
“This is the wudu without which Allah does not accept the prayer.”
  • Then washed each limb twice and said:
“Whoever performs wudu in this manner, Allah will grant him double reward.”
  • Then washed the limbs three times and said:
“This is my wudu and the wudu of the Prophets before me.”
    (Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ṣaḥīḥah by al-Albānī: 162)

Imām Ibn Ḥazm رحمه الله states that there is consensus among scholars that washing the limbs once is sufficient.

A Bedouin once inquired about the method of wudu. The Prophet ﷺ taught him to wash each limb three times and said:

“This is the complete wudu. Whoever does more than this has done wrong, has transgressed, and has acted unjustly.”
(Bukhārī: 581, Muslim: 532)

It is also permissible to wash some limbs twice and others three times, as supported by sound narrations:
(Abū Dāwūd, al-Ṭahārah, Bāb: al-Wuḍū’ Thalāthan Thalāthan, ḥadīth: 531; Nasā’ī: 041)
Declared authentic by Imām Ibn Khuzaymah, Imām Nawawī, and graded strong by Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar.

➋ Drying the Limbs After Wudu

Sayyiduna ‘Urwah رضي الله عنه narrates:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a piece of cloth which he used to dry himself with after performing wudu.”
(Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ṣaḥīḥah by al-Albānī: 2099)

➌ Warning Against Dry Heels

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullāh bin ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما reports:

“We were returning from Makkah with the Prophet ﷺ. We found water on the way, and some people performed wudu hastily, leaving their heels dry.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
‘Woe to the heels from the fire! Complete your wudu properly.’”
(Muslim, al-Ṭahārah, Bāb: Wujūb Ghasl al-Rijlayn bi Kammālihimā, ḥadīth: 142)

This hadith clearly instructs that wudu should be performed thoroughly and carefully so that no limb remains dry. It is best to wash the limbs three times.

➍ Washing the Limbs in Order and Continuously

Wudu must be performed in the prescribed order and without long delays between washing each limb.

A man once left a spot the size of a fingernail dry on his foot during wudu. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Go back and perform wudu properly.”
(Muslim, al-Ṭahārah, Bāb: Wujūb Istī‘āb Jamī‘ Ajzā’ Maḥall al-Ṭahārah, ḥadīth: 243)

The Prophet ﷺ didn’t just instruct him to wash the missed spot but commanded a complete repeat of wudu, indicating the importance of maintaining continuity (muwālāh).

If someone has nail polish or paint on their nails, it must be removed before wudu so water can reach the skin.

➎ Assisting Others in Wudu

Sayyiduna Mughīrah bin Shu'bah رضي الله عنه accompanied the Prophet ﷺ on a journey. When the Prophet ﷺ began performing wudu, Mughīrah رضي الله عنه poured water for him, and he ﷺ performed ablution.
(Bukhārī: 181; Muslim: 472)

➏ Performing Multiple Prayers With One Wudu

Sayyiduna Buraydah رضي الله عنه reports:

“On the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ performed multiple prayers with a single wudu and also wiped over his leather socks.

Sayyiduna ‘Umar al-Fārūq رضي الله عنه remarked:

‘Today you did something you did not do before.’

The Prophet ﷺ replied:

‘O ‘Umar, I did this deliberately, so that people would know it is permissible to pray several times with one wudu.’
(Muslim, al-Ṭahārah, Bāb: Jawāz al-Ṣalawāt Kullahā bi Wuḍū’ Wāḥid, ḥadīth: 277)

This proves that renewing wudu before every prayer is not obligatory, though it is preferred.

➐ Rinsing the Mouth After Drinking Milk

The Prophet ﷺ drank milk and then rinsed his mouth, saying:

“It contains fat.”
(Bukhārī, al-Wuḍū’, Bāb: Hal Yamḍmaḍu min al-Laban?, ḥadīth: 112; Muslim, al-Ḥayḍ, Bāb: Nasakh al-Wuḍū’ Mimma Massat al-Nār, ḥadīth: 853)

He ﷺ also:

  • Ate a shoulder of lamb, prayed without renewing wudu.
(Bukhārī, al-Wuḍū’, Bāb: Man Lam Yatawaḍḍa’ Min Laḥm al-Shāh, ḥadīth: 207; Muslim: 354)
  • Ate saṭw (roasted barley), rinsed his mouth, and then prayed without renewing wudu.
(Bukhārī, al-Wuḍū’, Bāb: Man Maḍmaḍa min al-Saṭw wa Lam Yatawaḍḍa’, ḥadīth: 209)
