Importance of Observing Hijab for Women Attending the Mosque

Observing Ḥijāb When Women Attend the Mosque

This excerpt is taken from Muhammad Ayyub Supra’s book Khawateen ka Masjid Namaz Mein Ba-Jamaat Parhne ka Mas’alah.

Qur’anic Command

Allah Almighty says:

(Al-Aḥzāb: 59)

“O Prophet! Tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to draw over themselves part of their outer garments.”

Explanation

  • Jilbāb refers to a large sheet or cloak that covers the entire body.
  • Drawing it over oneself means lowering it over the face in such a way that most of the face is covered, while still allowing visibility of the path by lowering the gaze.
  • This verse commands women to observe ḥijāb, and denial of it or insistence on public exposure can lead to disbelief.
  • The wisdom and benefits of ḥijāb mentioned in the verse include:
    • Distinguishing a modest, honorable woman from an immodest, immoral one.
    • Signaling that she is a respectable woman from a decent family, preventing harassment or misconduct.

Practical Guidance for Mosque Attendance

When women go to the mosque:

  • They should give special attention to proper covering according to Islamic guidelines.
  • Since men also come to the mosque for prayer, this precaution helps avoid unnecessary mixing.
  • Maintaining ḥijāb in the mosque preserves modesty and protects the dignity of the gathering.
