Supplication (duʿāʾ) in the state of Sujood (prostration) holds a special rank in Islam due to the closeness it brings between the servant and his Lord.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ الْعَبْدُ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ، فَأَكْثِرُوا الدُّعَاءَ
"The closest a servant is to his Lord is while he is in prostration, so increase your supplication therein."
[Muslim: 482; Kitāb al-Ṣalāh: Bāb Mā Yuqāl fī al-Rukūʿ wa al-Sujūd; Abū Dāwūd: 875; Nasā’ī: 2/226; Abū ʿAwānah: 2/180; Aḥmad: 2/421; Bayhaqī: 2/110]
This hadith establishes the immense spiritual significance of Sujood, encouraging believers to frequently ask from Allah in this humble position.
Another narration includes the following words:
وَأَمَّا السُّجُودُ فَاجْتَهِدُوا فِي الدُّعَاءِ، فَقَمِنٌ أَنْ يُسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ
"As for Sujood, strive hard in making duʿāʾ, for it is most likely that your supplication will be answered."
[Muslim: 479]
❖ Sujood is the moment of greatest nearness between a servant and his Lord.
❖ One should increase supplications during Sujood with humility and focus.
❖ The position of Sujood is highly likely to be a moment when duʿāʾ is accepted.
❖ The Prophet ﷺ emphasized striving in duʿāʾ, not merely reciting it passively.
Practical Tip:
While reciting the standard dhikr in Sujood, one may also make personal supplications in any language, especially during optional prayers (nafl). This is a precious opportunity to connect deeply with Allah ﷻ.
