Imam Shams al-Din Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Uthman al-Dhahabi (رحمه الله)
(Death: 748 AH) stated:
“When you see an innovating theologian (bid‘ati kalāmī) who says:
‘Keep us away from the Book of Allah and solitary Ahadith; let us speak based on reason,’
then understand that he is Abu Jahl.
And when you see a Sufi who adheres to the doctrine of Wahdat al-Wujūd saying:
‘Set aside intellect and transmission (Qur’an and Hadith), and speak based on spiritual taste and inner experience (dhawq and wajdān),’
then know with certainty that he is Iblis appearing in human form, or Iblis has incarnated within that person.
So, if you fear him, flee from him.
And if you do not flee, then throw him down, mount his chest, recite Ayat al-Kursi over him, blow on him, and grasp his neck tightly.”
