Question:
If a widow remarries, does she remain entitled to her first husband's inheritance and dowry?
Answer:
Whether a widow remarries or not, she remains entitled to inheritance and dower from her first husband, and no one can prevent a widow from remarrying; rather, she can remarry with the permission of a guardian, as this is better for her future life. Otherwise, she will remain dependent on others for her entire life and will not be able to live a prosperous life.
❀ Sayyidina Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:
"When Sayyidina Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that his daughter Sayyida Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) was widowed after the death of her husband Sayyidina Khunais bin Hudhafa (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a companion of Badr, he said that he met Sayyidina Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) and made him an offer. I said: If you wish, I can arrange the marriage of Hafsa with you. He replied: I will think about it (and let you know). I stayed for a few nights, then Uthman met me and said: I have come to the conclusion that I will not marry at this time. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that then I met Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: If you wish, I can arrange the marriage of Hafsa with you (ultimately, her marriage took place with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him))."
