If a Piece of Bread Falls on the Ground, Is It Permissible to Kiss It? — Ruling Explained

❖ Source: Fatawa Ameenpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Ameenpuri

❖ Question:
If a piece of bread falls to the ground and someone picks it up and kisses it, what is the ruling on this act?

Answer:

If bread falls to the ground, it should be picked up, cleaned, and eaten. However, kissing the bread is not permissible, as it is an unsupported act without any evidence from the Shari'ah.

Imam Ibn Nuhas رحمه الله (d. 814 AH) states:

تقبيل الخبز وهو بدعة لا تجوز
"Kissing bread is a bid‘ah (innovation) and an impermissible act."
(Tanbeeh al-Ghafileen, p. 515)

✿ Summary:

❌ Kissing fallen bread is an unsubstantiated practice.
✅ The correct practice is to clean it and eat it, out of respect and gratitude for the blessing of food — but without any additional ritual like kissing.
