Question:
If a father tells his son to give a divorce, what should be done?
Answer:
If the wife is obedient to Sharia and submissive to her husband, then the son should not obey the father's words and should not divorce the wife, for this woman is the greatest wealth in the world. To leave such a woman is disobedience to Allah, and it is not permissible to disobey the Creator in obeying the creation.
❀ Sayyidina Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
الدنيا متاع وخير متاع الدنيا المرأة الصالحة
"The world is a means of benefit, and the best thing in worldly possessions is a righteous woman."
Reference: (Sahih Muslim: 1467)
However, if the woman is disobedient and ungrateful, then the son should divorce his wife at the behest of his parents, for this is better for the son's worldly and hereafter salvation, just as Sayyidina Ibrahim (peace be upon him) conveyed to Sayyidina Ismail (peace be upon him).
❀ Sayyidina Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates:
"Sayyidina Ismail (peace be upon him) married a woman, and then Sayyidina Ibrahim (peace be upon him) thought to check on his child. Sayyidina Ibrahim (peace be upon him) came and inquired about Ismail (peace be upon him). The wife said: He goes hunting and you are not remembered at all. Sayyidina Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: When he comes, give him my message that he should change the threshold of his house. When the wife returned and delivered this message, Ismail (peace be upon him) said: That threshold is you, go back to your house, you are divorced."
