❀ Guidance from the Prophet ﷺ Regarding Food Invitations During Fasting

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reports that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"When one of you is invited to a meal while he is fasting, he should say, 'I am fasting.'"
[Sahih Muslim 1150]

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"When one of you is invited, he should respond. If he is fasting, let him pray (make du'a), and if he is not fasting, let him eat."
[Sahih Muslim 1431]

Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"Whoever is invited to a meal while he is fasting, let him respond. If he wishes, he may eat, and if he wishes, he may refrain."
[Sunan Ibn Majah 1751]

Scholarly Commentary

Imam Nawawi (رحمه الله) states:
"There is no difference of opinion that a fasting person is not obligated to eat. If it is a fard (obligatory) fast, then it is not permissible for him to eat, because abandoning an obligation is not allowed. But if it is a nafl (voluntary) fast, then it is permissible for him to break it. If the host would be genuinely distressed by the fasting person not partaking in the meal, then breaking the fast is better. Otherwise, completing the fast is more virtuous."
[Sharh Sahih Muslim 9/235]
