Question:
What is the enmity between Iblīs and the children of Ādam?

❖ Answer:

Allah Almighty says:

﴿وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ...﴾
[al-Isrāʾ: 61–65]

“And when We said to the angels: ‘Prostrate to Ādam,’ they all prostrated except Iblīs. He said: ‘Shall I prostrate to one whom You created from clay?’

He said: ‘Do You see this one whom You have honored above me? If You delay me until the Day of Resurrection, I will surely uproot his offspring, except a few.’

Allah said: ‘Go then, and whoever among them follows you — Hell will surely be your recompense, an ample recompense.’

‘And incite whomever you can among them with your voice, and mobilize against them your cavalry and infantry, and be a partner in their wealth and children, and make promises to them.’ But Satan promises them nothing but delusion.

‘Indeed, you will have no authority over My servants. And sufficient is your Lord as a Guardian.’”

❖ Explanation:

In the above verses, Allah ﷻ mentions the enmity of Iblīs towards Ādam (عليه السلام) and his descendants. This enmity began from the time of Ādam's creation, when Allah commanded the angels to prostrate to Ādam.

All obeyed except Iblīs, who refused out of pride and arrogance, deeming himself superior and Ādam insignificant. He said:

“Shall I prostrate to the one You created from clay?”

Then he vowed to dominate the offspring of Ādam and to misguide all but a few of them.

Thus, the enmity of Iblīs toward mankind is deep-rooted and ancient, and his mission is to lead as many of them astray as possible — except for those sincere servants of Allah upon whom he has no authority.
