Iʿtikāf Is Only Valid in Mosques: Qur’anic & Sunnah Proofs

✿ Iʿtikāf Is Only Valid in the Mosques ✿
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ ➊ Clear Qur’anic Command

Allah ﷻ states:

“...while you are observing iʿtikāf in the mosques.”
📖 [Al-Baqarah: 187]

This verse mentions mosques exclusively as the location for iʿtikāf, indicating that iʿtikāf is only valid in mosques.

❖ ➋ The Prophet ﷺ Also Practiced Iʿtikāf Only in the Mosque

ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها narrated that she would part the Prophet’s ﷺ hair:

وهو معتكف فى المسجد
“...while he was observing iʿtikāf in the mosque.”
📘 [Bukhārī: 2029, 2046; Muslim: 297; Abū Dāwūd: 2468; Ibn Mājah: 1776; Aḥmad: 6/81; Ibn Khuzaymah: 2231; Ibn Ḥibbān: 3669]

❖ ➌ Practice of the Companions

Nāfiʿ رحمه الله said:

“ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما showed me the place in the mosque where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform iʿtikāf.”
📘 [Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 2154; Abū Dāwūd: 2465; Ibn Mājah: 1773]

❖ Scholarly Views

Iʿtikāf is only valid in Masjid al-Ḥarām and Masjid al-Nabawī.
    📚 [Al-Lubāb fī ʿUlūm al-Kitāb: 3/319]
It is valid in these two and also in Masjid al-Aqṣā.
    📚 [Tafsīr al-Rāzī: 5/197]
  • Al-Zuhrī رحمه الله: Only valid in *Jāmiʿ (congregational) mosques.
    📚 [Same reference]
  • Imām Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله: Valid only in mosques with an appointed Imām and Muʾadhdhin. Additionally, women may perform iʿtikāf in their designated prayer areas at home.
  • Imām al-Shāfiʿī and Imām Aḥmad رحمهما الله: Iʿtikāf is valid in all mosques, but Jāmiʿ mosques are preferred.
  • Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله: Scholars agree that a mosque is a condition for valid iʿtikāf, except Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Lubābah al-Mālikī, who considered it valid anywhere.
  • The Majority (Jumhūr): Iʿtikāf is valid in all mosques.
    📚 [Nayl al-Awṭār: 3/255; Fatḥ al-Bārī: 4/706; Al-Lubāb fī ʿUlūm al-Kitāb: 3/319]

Preferred Opinion (Rājiḥ): The opinion of the majority is the most sound — iʿtikāf is valid in all mosques.

Bukhārī رحمه الله cited the verse:

وَلَا تُبَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَأَنتُمْ عَاكِفُونَ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ
“Do not approach your wives while you are in retreat in the mosques.”
📘 [Bukhārī: before Ḥadīth 2025, Kitāb al-Iʿtikāf: Bāb al-Iʿtikāf fī al-ʿAshr al-Awākhir]

❖ Iʿtikāf for Women: Only in Mosques

Women must also perform iʿtikāf in the mosque.
This is the view of Imām al-Shāfiʿī and Imām Aḥmad
📚 [Al-Mughnī: 4/464]

❖ Iʿtikāf in the Last Ten Days of Ramadan Is Highly Emphasized

This is because the Prophet ﷺ consistently observed iʿtikāf during the last ten days of Ramadan. As narrated by ʿĀ’ishah

“The Prophet ﷺ used to observe iʿtikāf in the last ten days of Ramadan until Allah took his soul.”
📘 [Bukhārī: 2026; Muslim: 1172; Abū Dāwūd: 2462; Tirmidhī: 790; Aḥmad: 6/92; ʿAbd al-Razzāq: 7682; Ibn Khuzaymah: 2223; Dāraqutnī: 2/201]

❖ Encouraged Acts During the Last Ten Nights

“When the last ten days of Ramadan began, the Prophet ﷺ would tighten his waist belt (exert himself), stay awake all night, and awaken his family.”
📘 [Bukhārī: 2024; Muslim: 1174; Abū Dāwūd: 1376; Nasāʾī: 3/217; Ibn Mājah: 1768; Ibn Khuzaymah: 2214; Sharḥ al-Sunnah: 1823]

ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها also said:

كان النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم يجتهد فى العشر الأواخر مالا يجتهد فى غيره
“The Prophet ﷺ used to strive in the last ten days more than at any other time.”
📘 [Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Mājah: 1430; Kitāb al-Ṣawm: Bāb Fī Faḍl al-ʿAshr al-Awākhir; al-Ṣaḥīḥah: 2123; Ibn Mājah: 1767]

❖ Virtue of Worship on Laylat al-Qadr

Narrated from Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:

من قام ليلة القدر إيمانا واحتسابا غفر له ماتقدم من ذنبه
“Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.”
📘 [Bukhārī: 2014; Muslim: 760; Nasāʾī al-Kubrā as cited in Tuḥfat al-Ashrāf: 10/13730; Aḥmad: 2/281; Tirmidhī: 808; Ibn Mājah: 1326]

❖ Qur’anic Virtue of Laylat al-Qadr

📖 [Sūrat al-Qadr: 3–5]
“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit (Jibrīl عليه السلام) descend therein by permission of their Lord with every decree. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.”
