Iʿtikāf: Complete Guide with Rulings & Virtues from Sunnah

◈ Definition of Iʿtikāf​

Lexically, Iʿtikāf means to remain or stay.
In Sharʿī terminology, it refers to secluding oneself in the mosque with the intention of worship and seeking the pleasure of Allah.

◈ Intention for Iʿtikāf​

Having a sincere intention is essential for Iʿtikāf. However, verbalizing the intention with phrases like "Nawaytu Sunnat al-Iʿtikāf" is a bidʿah (innovation). Intention is an act of the heart.

◈ Importance of Iʿtikāf​

The continuous practice of the Prophet ﷺ in observing Iʿtikāf highlights its significance.

ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (RA) narrated:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe Iʿtikāf during the last ten days of Ramadan."
[Muwaṭṭā, ḥadīth no. 306]

ʿĀ’ishah (RA) narrated:
"The Prophet ﷺ used to observe Iʿtikāf in the last ten days of Ramadan until he passed away. Afterwards, his wives continued the practice."
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth no. 2026]

◈ Virtues of Iʿtikāf​

1st Virtue
“The one in Iʿtikāf refrains from sins and receives the reward equal to that of those who perform all good deeds.”
[Sunan Ibn Mājah: 1781]

2nd Virtue
“Whoever observes Iʿtikāf for one day seeking Allah’s pleasure, Allah places three trenches between him and Hellfire, each wider than the distance between East and West.”
[Ṭabarānī – Maʿjam al-Kabīr: 2888]

3rd Virtue
“Whoever performs Iʿtikāf for ten days in Ramadan, it is as if he has performed two Ḥajj and two ʿUmrah.”
[Ṭabarānī & Bayhaqī]

Where Should Iʿtikāf Be Performed?

Iʿtikāf is valid only in the mosque, for both men and women.

✔ The Prophet ﷺ and his wives performed Iʿtikāf in the masjid
✔ A masjid with a regular imām and mu’adhin is suitable for Iʿtikāf

◈ Is Short-Term Iʿtikāf Permissible?​

Yes, even one or two days of Iʿtikāf is valid.

✔ Evidence: ʿUmar (RA) made a vow to perform one night of Iʿtikāf in Makkah.
[Dārquṭnī: 2354]

◈ When Should the Person Enter for Iʿtikāf?​

He should arrive on the evening of the 20th of Ramadan and enter the Iʿtikāf area after Fajr on the 21st.
[Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 791; Abū Dāwūd: 2465]

◈ Can Tents Be Set Up in the Masjid?​

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ and his wives had tents pitched for Iʿtikāf.
[Sunan al-Nasā’ī: 710]

📝 Observations:① Iʿtikāf requires a designated area with privacy
② A mutual spirit of righteous competition among the wives is evident
③ If Iʿtikāf is missed due to a valid reason, it may be made up later
Women should observe Iʿtikāf in the masjid, not at home

Talking to People During Iʿtikāf

Necessary communication is allowed.
✔ The Prophet ﷺ spoke with people while in his tent.

◈ Can Beds or Mattresses Be Used?​

Yes. A bed or mat can be set up in the Iʿtikāf area.

◈ Iʿtikāf as a Vow (Nadhr)​

Whoever vows to perform Iʿtikāf must fulfill it.

✔ ʿUmar (RA) said: “I vowed in Jāhiliyyah to perform one night of Iʿtikāf.”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Fulfill your vow.”
[Musnad Aḥmad: 24518, 24597]

◈ Is Fasting Required for Iʿtikāf?​

No. Fasting is not mandatory, though it is preferable.
“There is no fasting required for the one in Iʿtikāf except if he makes it obligatory upon himself.”
