How to Intend and Perform Gratitude (Shukr) Nafl After a Vow

Intention and Method for Offering Gratitude (Shukr) Nafl Prayers
Answered by: Shaykh Khidr Hayat ḥafiẓahullah

✦ Question:

I made a vow (manat) that if a certain task of mine is fulfilled, I would offer gratitude prayers (nawāfil). What is the correct intention and method for performing these prayers?

✦ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, you have made a vow for a righteous act. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him; and whoever vows to disobey Him, let him not disobey Him.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 6696]

This affirms the importance of fulfilling vows that are in obedience to Allah.

✦ Method for Gratitude (Shukr) Nafl Prayers

❖ Intention (Niyyah):

Niyyah is the resolve of the heart — no specific verbal wording is required.
✔ Simply intend in your heart:

“I am offering two rak‘ahs of nafl prayer in gratitude to Allah for fulfilling my need.”

❖ How to Perform the Nawāfil:

➤ Offer two rak‘ahs of nafl prayer, as you would perform any voluntary prayer.
➤ Let your heart be filled with thankfulness and humility to Allah for His favor and mercy.

❖ No Verbal Niyyah Required:

✔ There is no need to pronounce the intention aloud.
✔ A sincere inner resolve is sufficient, which is in line with the sunnah.

❖ Summary

☑ Offer two rak‘ahs of gratitude (shukr) prayer as per your vow.
☑ Make the intention in your heart that you are offering these out of thankfulness to Allah.
☑ No special words are required for the intention.
☑ This act is in accordance with the Sunnah and a means of drawing closer to Allah.
