How to Distribute 4 Million Rupees According to Islamic Inheritance Law

✦ Shar‘i Distribution of Inheritance: Division of 4 Million Rupees ✦

❖ Question:

If the deceased leaves behind approximately 4 million rupees (40 lakhs) in assets, and the heirs include one wife, four sons, and three daughters, how will the inheritance be distributed according to Islamic law?

❖ Answer by:
Fadhilat al-Bāḥith Kamran Ilahi Zaheer ḥafiẓahullāh
Fadhilat al-‘Ālim Ikramullah Wahidi ḥafiẓahullāh

✦ Step 1: Wife’s Fixed Share

According to the Qur’an, the wife’s share is 1/8 (one-eighth) when the deceased has children.

1/8 of 4,000,000 = 500,000 rupees

✦ Step 2: Distribution of Remaining Estate

After deducting the wife’s share:

4,000,000 – 500,000 = 3,500,000 rupees

This remaining amount is to be divided among the children, where each son gets twice the share of a daughter, as per the Qur'anic rule.

✦ Step 3: Total Number of Shares

◈ 4 sons × 2 = 8 shares
◈ 3 daughters × 1 = 3 shares
Total shares = 11

✦ Step 4: Value of One Share

3,500,000 ÷ 11 ≈ 318,181 rupees

✦ Step 5: Individual Shares of Children

Each son gets 2 shares:
2 × 318,181 ≈ 636,363 rupees

Each daughter gets 1 share:
1 × 318,181 ≈ 318,181 rupees
