How to Combine Maghrib and ʿIshāʼ in Rain: Sequence of Obligatory and Sunnah Prayers

❖ Method of Combining Maghrib and ʿIshāʼ Prayers Due to Rain ❖
❓ Question:

If a resident (muqīm) combines Maghrib and ʿIshāʼ prayers due to rain, should the Sunnah of Maghrib be offered before or after ʿIshāʼ?

📝 Answer by: Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir (حفظه الله)

According to the scholars, when a resident combines Maghrib and ʿIshāʼ prayers due to rain, the correct order is as follows:

✔ Order of Prayers in Case of Rain:

① First, perform the Farḍ (obligatory) prayers of Maghrib and ʿIshāʼ, in sequence and with one adhān and two iqāmahs.
② Then, pray the Sunnah of Maghrib.
③ After that, pray the Sunnah of ʿIshāʼ.

📌 Scholarly Support:

This view is affirmed by:

  • Shaykh Ibn Bāz (رحمه الله)
  • Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Munajjid (حفظه الله)

Both have issued fatāwā confirming that Sunnah prayers should follow the combined Farḍ prayers, maintaining the proper sequence.

✅ Conclusion

✔ When combining Maghrib and ʿIshāʼ due to rain, a resident person should:

  1. Perform Maghrib Farḍ,
  2. Then ʿIshāʼ Farḍ,
  3. Then Maghrib Sunnah,
  4. Finally ʿIshāʼ Sunnah.

This is the correct and preferred method according to reliable contemporary scholars.
