How Powerful is Satan?

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafizahullah)

Answer:

Allah Almighty states in the Qur'an:

الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّـهِ ۖ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ الطَّاغُوتِ فَقَاتِلُوا أَوْلِيَاءَ الشَّيْطَانِ ۖ إِنَّ كَيْدَ الشَّيْطَانِ كَانَ ضَعِيفًا ﴿٧٦

"Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Taghut (falsehood). So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has always been weak."
(Surah An-Nisa: 76)

This means that believers fight for the obedience and pleasure of Allah, while disbelievers fight in obedience to Satan. Allah encourages believers to engage in combat against their enemies by saying:

"So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has always been weak."

Satan Has No Control Over a True Believer

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to Umar bin Khattab (رضي الله عنه):

"By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! Whenever Satan meets you on a broad path, he takes a different path. Indeed, Satan has no control over a believer."

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 3683)

Additionally, in Fath al-Bari (7/47), a narration from Sayyidah Hafsah (رضي الله عنها) states:

"Since Umar (رضي الله عنه) accepted Islam, Satan falls on his face whenever he sees him."

Conclusion:

Satan does have certain abilities, but his power is weak compared to the strength of a true believer. He cannot dominate or control a strong believer who remains steadfast in faith and obedience to Allah.
