A precise determination of the number of aḥādīth is not possible, due to the vast number of collections compiled over centuries and the ongoing academic discoveries in each generation.
◈ Musnad Aḥmad contains over 27,000 aḥādīth.
◈ Kanz al-ʿUmmāl includes around 47,000 aḥādīth.
◈ Al-Ṭabarānī's compilations hold more than 30,000 narrations.
◈ The major ḥadīth imāms reportedly memorized up to 1,000,000 narrations.
◈ Imām al-Bukhārī alone memorized 600,000 aḥādīth.
According to some scholars:
✔ Marfūʿ aḥādīth (those directly attributed to the Prophet ﷺ), excluding repetitions, are approximately 40,000.
✔ Mawqūf aḥādīth (statements from the Companions) are uncountable, as:
