Horse Racing and Other Competitions
Rulings on Some Forms of Racing
- Horse and Camel Racing:Organizing horse and camel races, as well as competitions in horsemanship, is sometimes obligatory and sometimes recommended, especially when it serves the purpose of jihad, defense of the land, support for the religion, and propagation of Islam. Such activities may be necessary when they are required for the training of Muslim warriors and the preparation of defense resources like aircraft, tanks, and weapons. Whoever organizes or contributes in any form—whether through skill, thought, or wealth—towards such endeavors will earn reward and blessings.
- Rewards for Successful Competitors:It is permissible for the winners of these races to receive prizes. If the prize is awarded by the president or any representative of the state, or if it is voluntarily arranged by individuals who are not participating in the race, this is acceptable. Those who arrange the prizes, with the intention of seeking the pleasure of Allah, will also earn reward. Allah Almighty says:
"And prepare for them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war, by which you may strike terror into the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know but whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged." [Al-Anfal: 60]
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"The only competitions for which a reward is allowed are those involving camels, horses, and archery." [Sunan an-Nasa'i, Hadith 3585]
If the reward is given voluntarily and with mutual consent among the race participants, where the winner takes the prize, this is permissible. However, if the prize is restricted to only a few spectators who have purchased tickets to watch the race, this is not allowed, as it involves gambling among the spectators.
However, if the ruler or a philanthropist provides the reward and offers free tickets to all spectators to attend the race, then there is no harm, provided that the purpose of the race and its viewing is in accordance with Islamic principles and objectives.
