Hope in Repentance and Divine Forgiveness

❀ Question:

I was regular in my prayers, but after failing in exams, I began to complain against religion and destiny. I harbored ill thoughts toward Allah and even stopped praying for some time. Later, I realized my mistake and repented. Will Allah accept my repentance? Am I still part of the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ?

✔ ① Allah’s Mercy:

Firstly, if you verbally spoke ill of Allah or destiny, that is a grave sin, potentially amounting to apostasy (irtidad). Such an act is a serious injustice against the One who gave you life and guidance. Perhaps Allah withheld something harmful from your future or redirected you toward something better. Thus, being content with Allah’s decree is essential.

However, if these thoughts remained in your heart only and were never spoken, then dismiss them and turn to thankfulness for Allah’s blessings.

✔ ② Allah’s Forgiveness:

No matter how great your sin, Allah’s mercy and forgiveness are even greater. If you repent sincerely, Allah will forgive you, as He has promised:

﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ﴾
(An-Nisa: 48)
"Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating others with Him, but He forgives anything less than that for whom He wills."

This applies to those who die without repenting. For anyone who repents sincerely, whether the sin was shirk, disbelief, or otherwise, Allah is willing to forgive all sins:

﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ﴾
(Az-Zumar: 53)
"Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful."

✔ ③ Your Repentance:

Your concern about no longer being part of the Ummah is unwarranted if you have truly repented. The Hadith in Bukhari about exclusion from the Ummah applies to those who die without repentance in a state of innovation or disbelief. Since you have returned to Allah, rejoice and increase your good deeds.
Be steadfast in prayer, for it is the connection between servant and Lord.

May Allah accept your repentance and forgive your sins.

✔ ④ Returning to Islam After Apostasy:

If someone (Allah forbid) leaves Islam and wants to return, they must proclaim the Shahadah:
"La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur Rasulullah."
If they denied any part of Islamic teaching, they must affirm it again.

The door of repentance remains open until death.

❀ Conclusion:

Your repentance will be accepted if you sincerely turn to Allah and uphold Islamic duties like prayer.
Allah’s mercy is vast, and the doors of forgiveness are always open.
