Hope and Fear in Islam: Balanced Belief of Ahl al-Sunnah

Hope and Fear in Islam: Balanced Belief of Ahl al-Sunnah

📚 Derived from: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

❖ Question:

What is the position of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamāʿah regarding hope (رجاء) and fear (خوف)?
Should one outweigh the other, or should both be kept equal?

❖ Foundational Principle in Ahl al-Sunnah Creed:

The scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamāʿah have expressed different views regarding the balance between hope and fear, especially in relation to various states and circumstances.

✦ Statement of Imām Aḥmad رحمه الله:

“Hope and fear should be equal; one should not outweigh the other.”

“If either of the two dominates completely, the person is destroyed.”

✦ Explanation:

◈ If hope becomes dominant, the person may become heedless of Allah’s punishment, leading to sin and complacency.

◈ If fear becomes dominant, the person may despair of Allah’s mercy, which is itself a major spiritual danger.

❖ Opinion of Some Scholars:

“During acts of obedience, hope should be predominant; during moments of intending disobedience, fear should prevail.”

Explanation:
– When performing righteous deeds, one should have hope in Allah’s acceptance and reward.
– When tempted to sin, fear of Allah’s punishment should act as a deterrent.

❖ Another View from Scholars:

“A healthy person should let fear dominate; a sick or dying person should let hope dominate.”

Wisdom Behind This:
– For a healthy person, fear prevents pride and wrongdoing.
– For a sick person, hope allows him to meet Allah with good expectations and inner peace.

❖ Author’s Analysis and Balanced View:

The author concludes that it depends on the condition of the person and their internal state.

◈ If fear leads to despair, one should cultivate hope.

◈ If hope leads to negligence and sin, one should cultivate fear.

➤ The believer must be conscious of their heart’s state, diagnosing and treating it with the right proportion of hope and fear.

❖ Role of a Living Heart:

◈ A person with a spiritually alive heart can examine, treat, and adjust their spiritual state.

◈ One with a spiritually dead heart becomes heedless, unconcerned, and is like an untethered animal wandering without direction or control.

✔ Summary:

✅ Ahl al-Sunnah uphold a balanced approach:
Hope and fear must go hand-in-hand.
– Excessive fear leads to despair, and excessive hope leads to complacency.
– The heart must be aware, reactive, and connected to Allah in all conditions.
