❀ Shari‘ah-Compliant Arrangement for Congregational Prayer at Home ❀
Excerpted from: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, p. 265
(Question by: Ẓafar Iqbāl, Kāmarah)
❖ Question:
In a household where the husband leads the prayer and the wife and children also participate (all being Ahl-e-Ḥadīth), what should be the correct standing position (saff/row)?
Should the man stand in front and the woman and children behind him?
Where should a young (non-bāligh) boy stand?
❖ Answer:
All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. To proceed:
The correct order for standing in congregational prayer within the home — as per the authentic Sunnah — is as follows:
➊ The Proper Row Arrangement in Home Congregation:
✔ Imam (Husband):
He should stand at the front as the Imām.
✔ Male Children (Even if Non-Bāligh):
They should form a row directly behind the Imām, regardless of their age.
This is because even young boys are treated as males in saff formation.
✔ Women and Girls (Wife and Daughters):
They should stand behind the male children, forming a separate row.
Women never stand beside or in the same row as men in congregation — even within the home.
➋ Authentic Evidence:
Narrated by Anas ibn Mālik (RA):
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up (for prayer), and I and the orphan stood behind him, and the old woman stood behind us."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 380, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 658)
This narration clearly shows:
- The Prophet ﷺ in front as Imām
- Two males behind him
- One woman behind them
This is direct and clear evidence from the Sunnah for how to structure rows when praying at home with a mixed group (men, boys, women).
➌ Summary:
❖ Imām (husband) – Stands alone in the front row.
❖ Male children – Form the next row directly behind him.
❖ Women (wife, daughters) – Stand in a separate row behind the males.
❖ This order applies whether the children are bāligh or not.
❖ It is not allowed for women to stand in line with men or boys during prayer.
