However, some people attempt to diminish the true status of martyrdom by narrating weak and fabricated reports, suggesting that merely performing certain actions grants the reward of martyrdom in this very world.
Among such narrations are:
◈ The report claiming that the ink of scholars is superior to the blood of martyrs
◈ And the present narration under discussion
This narration has been reported by Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil (2/739) and by al-Bayhaqī in Kitāb al-Zuhd.
In its chain of narration is Ḥasan bin Qutaybah, concerning whom:
✔ al-Dāraquṭnī declared him matrūk al-ḥadīth (abandoned in ḥadīth)
✔ Abū Ḥātim declared him ḍaʿīf (weak)
✔ al-Azdī declared him wāhī al-ḥadīth (extremely weak)
✔ al-ʿUqaylī stated that he committed many errors
✔ al-Dhahabī described him as inclined (i.e., unreliable)
Another reason for the weakness of this narration is that its chain includes ʿAbd al-Khāliq bin al-Mundhir, who is an unknown narrator.
Similarly, al-Ṭabarānī (al-Awsaṭ) and Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ (8/200) narrate a version mentioning the reward of one martyr instead of one hundred, but its chain contains Muḥammad bin Ṣāliḥ al-ʿAdarī, whose biographical details are unknown.

Question:
It is narrated from Abū Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Prophet ﷺ said:Is this narration authentic?“Whoever holds firmly to my Sunnah at the time when my Ummah becomes corrupt, for him is the reward of one hundred martyrs.”
(al-Bayhaqī)
Answer:
The status of martyrdom (shahādah) is extremely lofty in the sight of Allah. Martyrdom is not restricted by time or place in terms of virtue. Meaning, at any time and in any place, if a person sacrifices his life in the path of Allah for the elevation of the Word of Allah, it is a means of great virtue. However, some people attempt to diminish the true status of martyrdom by narrating weak and fabricated reports, suggesting that merely performing certain actions grants the reward of martyrdom in this very world.
