History and Revival of Hadith Rejection: Causes and Challenges

❀ The History, Causes, and Modern Challenges of Hadith Rejection (Inkār al-Sunnah) ❀
Written by: Mawlānā Ṭalḥah al-Saif

✿ Emergence of Hadith Rejection in Islamic History

The fitnah (trial) of denying Sunnah first emerged in the second century Hijri, initiated by:

➊ The Khawārij:

  • Used Hadith rejection to justify extremist ideologies and promote anarchy.
  • Since the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ posed a barrier to their goals, they challenged the authenticity of Hadith and rejected its authority.

➋ The Muʿtazilah:

  • Influenced by Greek and Persian philosophy, they evaluated Islamic beliefs through rationalism, viewing the Sunnah as a hindrance.
  • Thus, they attempted to discredit Hadith and declared the Sunnah unnecessary.

✿ Objectives Behind Denying the Sunnah

The central goal was to separate the Qur’an from the explanatory role of the Prophet ﷺ and his practical example, in order to reinterpret Islam to suit their desires.

To achieve this, two main tactics were used:

Casting doubt on the authenticity of Hadith
Questioning why following the Prophet ﷺ is necessary at all

✿ The Decline of the Early Fitnah

By the third century Hijri, the fitnah of Hadith rejection weakened and faded due to several key factors:

➊ Scholarly Research by the Muḥaddithīn:

  • Hadith scholars carried out meticulous investigations, compiling only authentic narrations and distinguishing weak or fabricated ones.

➋ Qur’anic Evidence for Prophetic Authority:

  • Scholars highlighted that the Prophet ﷺ was not merely a conveyor of the Qur’an, but also a teacher, legislator, and leader.

“Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it.”
(Surah al-Ḥashr: 7)

➌ Collective Awareness of the Ummah:

  • The Muslim Ummah never accepted the idea that a believer could profess faith in the Prophet ﷺ while rejecting his guidance.
  • It was inconceivable to accept the Qur’an while denying the authority of the Prophet ﷺ.

✿ Revival of Hadith Rejection in the 13th Century Hijri

After centuries of silence, this fitnah resurfaced in the 13th century Hijri (19th century CE) in British India, spearheaded by:

  • Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan and Maulvi Chirāgh ʿAlī
  • Maulvi ʿAbdullāh Chakrālawī
  • Maulvi Aḥmaduddīn Amritsarī and Maulana Aslam Jīrājpūrī
  • Chaudhry Ghulām Ahmad Parwēz

Causes of Revival:

Intellectual Defeatism:

  • Attempt to mold Islam according to Western philosophy, science, and culture.

Political and Educational Decline:

  • Muslims’ political and military weakness led to inferiority complex, which paved the way for reinterpretation of Islam under Western influence.

✿ Modern Tools of Hadith Rejection

  1. Utilizing Orientalist Criticism:
    • Adopting Western academic objections on Hadith to cast doubt within Muslim minds.
  2. Mockery of Hadith Collections:
    • Highlighting narrations out of context to create confusion and discredit the Hadith corpus.
  3. Minimizing the Role of Prophethood:
    • Presenting the Prophet ﷺ as only a conveyor of the Qur’an, denying his role as legislator and example.
  4. Promoting the Qur’an as the Only Source:
    • Marginalizing the Sunnah from the Islamic legal framework.
  5. Manipulating Qur’anic Terminology:
    • Twisting linguistic meanings to support deviant interpretations.

✿ Effects of Modern Hadith Rejection

Modern proponents of Hadith rejection aim to reform Islam into a secular ideology, which includes:

  • “Nizām-e-Rubūbiyyah” (System of Sustenance):
    • Abolishing private ownership and placing all wealth under a central government.
  • Abolition of Political Parties:
    • Denying the right to organize against unjust rulers.
  • Replacing Divine Authority with “Markaz-e-Millat” (Center of the Nation):
    • Substituting Allah and His Messenger ﷺ with a man-made authority.

✿ Conclusion

Whether ancient or modern, the core objective of Hadith rejection has always been to distort Islam’s divine system.

Yet the fitnah has always failed, due to:

✔ The collective consciousness of the Ummah
✔ The scholarly rigor of the Muḥaddithīn
✔ The clarity and authority of the Qur’an and Sunnah

Let it be clear: Islam without the Sunnah is not Islam.
