Is it obligatory for my sister to observe purdah (hijab) from our paternal cousin, even though he is soon to become our in-law, as he intends to marry his daughter to my brother?
It is important to note that the marriage has not yet taken place.
Please clarify the ruling on this matter.
Yes, it is obligatory for your sister to observe hijab from her paternal cousin, because he is not a maḥram, even if he is a close relative.
Even if he marries his daughter to your brother, he remains a non-maḥram to your sister, and the hijab must still be observed.
Likewise, a sister’s brother-in-law, or her brother’s father-in-law, are also non-maḥrams, and hijab is obligatory in front of them.
