Healing Through Duʿāʾ
In the same way that supplication is referred to as duʿāʾ in Urdu when one asks Allah for help, its Arabic root is د،ع،و. It means to call or to seek assistance. Generally, a person turns to duʿāʾ in times of distress, pain, illness, hardship, or need. However, the Prophet ﷺ advised that one should establish a strong connection with Allah during times of ease so that He will remember you in times of hardship.
Moreover, the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ include specific supplications for various circumstances, difficulties, and needs. A scholar once said, “The most incapable person is he who is incapable of making duʿāʾ.” The Prophet ﷺ emphasized its significance by saying that Allah becomes displeased with the one who does not ask from Him.
Duʿāʾ is so vital that even asking for something as trivial as a shoelace should be directed to Allah alone. One should not present their problems before traditional spiritual healers, saints, or graves but rather directly to Allah, who listens and is more merciful than a mother.
Duʿāʾ as a Form of Worship
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Duʿāʾ is worship itself.” When one asks from Allah, He is pleased, rewards the supplicant, and often grants what is asked. But asking from anyone besides Allah—whether alive or dead—is an act of grave sin, as it contradicts the core of Tawḥīd: there is none worthy of worship except Allah.
Keys to Acceptance of Duʿāʾ
◈ Use of Allah’s Greatest Name (Ism al-Aʿẓam) in duʿāʾ.
◈ Begin with praise of Allah and send salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ.
◈ Repetition and consistency in duʿāʾ, especially at accepted times.
◈ Humility, sincerity, and full conviction that Allah will respond.
Duʿāʾs That Are Never Rejected
➊ The duʿāʾ of the oppressed
➋ The duʿāʾ of a traveler
➌ The duʿāʾ of a father for (or against) his children
Allah Alone Relieves Affliction
When a person is in desperate need and calls upon Allah, He is the One who listens and removes their suffering. Therefore, in every hardship, one must turn only to Him with complete trust.
Examples of Comprehensive and Beneficial Supplications
Here are some key supplications and situations:
✔ For removing distress:
❀ There is no deity except You; You are exalted. Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers.
✔ For guidance, piety, purity, and sufficiency:
❀ O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.
✔ For anxiety and sorrow:
❀ O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sadness, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from the burden of debts and the domination of men.
✔ The morning and evening protection:
❀ In the name of Allah with whose name nothing can harm in the heavens or the earth.
✔ Before undertaking an important matter:
❀ Perform two rakʿahs and recite the supplication of Istikhārah.
✔ For children and righteous offspring:
❀ O my Lord, grant me from Yourself a pure offspring. Truly, You are the Hearer of supplication.
✔ For the increase of knowledge:
❀ My Lord, increase me in knowledge.
✔ For protection from the grave, trials, and Hellfire:
❀ O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the torment of Hell.
✔ For forgiveness:
❀ O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly and none forgives sins but You. Grant me forgiveness and have mercy on me.
Conclusion
Healing through duʿāʾ is not just a spiritual remedy but a powerful means of connection with the Divine. It is a believer’s shield in hardship, a weapon against adversity, and a means of attaining closeness to Allah. Whether the need is small or great, physical or emotional, worldly or spiritual, there is no better healer than Allah, and no better medicine than sincere supplication.
