❖ Question
Which beverages are considered ḥalāl and ḥarām in Islam?
❖ Answer
In Islam, all beverages are permissible except two:
① Any drink that intoxicates — even a small amount of it is ḥarām.
② Any drink that is harmful to health.
❖ Evidence from the Qur’ān
Allah ﷻ says:
﴿وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ﴾
(al-Baqarah: 195)
“Do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands.”
And He ﷻ says:
﴿وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ﴾
(al-Nisāʾ: 29)
“Do not kill yourselves.”
❖ Scholarly Consensus
◈ Imām Ibn al-ʿArabī (d. 543H):
((اتفق العلماء على حل الأشربة بأجمعها إلا ما كان مسكرا أو كان فى شربه ضرر))
“The scholars are unanimously agreed that all drinks are permissible except that which intoxicates or that which is harmful to drink.”
— al-Qabas fī Sharḥ Muwaṭṭaʾ Mālik ibn Anas, p. 652
Conclusion
- Permissible: All drinks that are free from harm and intoxication.
- Prohibited:
• Any intoxicating beverage (e.g., wine, alcohol, or anything similar).
• Any harmful drink that endangers health.
