❖ Question

Two narrations are presented regarding the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: “Ḥusayn is from me and I am from Ḥusayn.” Please verify them using the science of ḥadīth narrators (ʿIlm al-Rijāl).

Narration 1

Summary of Text:
Umm al-Faḍl (RA) narrates: One day I saw tears flowing from the eyes of the Prophet ﷺ. I asked: “May my parents be sacrificed for you, why are you crying?”
He ﷺ said:

“Jibrīl came to me and informed me that my Ummah will kill this son of mine (Ḥusayn RA). He also brought me the red soil from the place where he will be killed.”
(Mishkāt, Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah by al-Bayhaqī)

Chain in al-Bayhaqī’s Dalāʾil (6/469):
Muḥammad ibn Muṣʿab → al-Awzāʿī → Shaddād ibn ʿAbd Allāh

Status of the Chain:

  • The weakness is due to Muḥammad ibn Muṣʿab.

Statements of Scholars on Muḥammad ibn Muṣʿab ibn Ṣidqah al-Qurqusāʾī:

  • Imām Aḥmad: His narrations from al-Awzāʿī are muqārib (close to ḥasan or ṣaḥīḥ). (Masāʾil Abī Dāwūd, p. 328)
  • Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī: He makes many mistakes in narrations from al-Awzāʿī.
  • Ibn Ḥibbān: Declared one of his narrations from al-Awzāʿī bāṭil.
  • Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim: He narrates munkar aḥādīth from al-Awzāʿī.

Conclusion:
The stronger position is that Muḥammad ibn Muṣʿab’s narrations from al-Awzāʿī are weak. Hence, this narration is ḍaʿīf (weak).

Narration 2

Text:

“Ḥusayn is from me and I am from Ḥusayn. May Allah love the one who loves Ḥusayn. Ḥusayn is one of the grandsons (asbāṭ).”

Chain:
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym → Saʿīd ibn Abī Rāshid → Yaʿlā al-ʿĀmirī

Sources:

  • Musnad Aḥmad (4/172)
  • Faḍāʾil al-Ṣaḥābah by Aḥmad (ḥadīth 1361)
  • Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah (12/102–103, ḥadīth 3218)
  • al-Mustadrak (3/177, ḥadīth 4820) – al-Ḥākim: “Ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād”, al-Dhahabī: “Ṣaḥīḥ”
  • Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān (6932, 6971)
  • al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/33, 22/274)
  • Sunan Ibn Mājah (ḥadīth 144)
  • Sunan al-Tirmidhī (ḥadīth 3775) – al-Tirmidhī: “Ḥasan”

Grading:

  • Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, and al-Dhahabī: Ṣaḥīḥ.
  • al-Tirmidhī: Ḥasan.
  • al-Būṣayrī: “Its isnād is ḥasan, its narrators are trustworthy.”

Narrator: Saʿīd ibn Abī Rāshid

  • al-Dhahabī: Ṣadūq (al-Kāshif, 1/285).
  • Declared trustworthy by Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Ḥākim.

al-Albānī’s view: Despite mentioning some criticisms, he graded it ḥasan due to supporting evidence (al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah, 3/229, no. 1227).

Conclusion:
This narration is ḥasan li-dhātih and ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrih.

Final Ruling

  1. Umm al-Faḍl narration about the prophecy of Ḥusayn’s martyrdom → Weak (due to Muḥammad ibn Muṣʿab).
  2. “Ḥusayn is from me and I am from Ḥusayn” → Ḥasan by itself, ṣaḥīḥ with supporting chains.
