❀ Question

Where is the Hadith in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī that mentions Mūsā (AS) supplicating to Allah to be the last prophet, or that he asked to be granted the last Ummah, or as it is generally stated in Hadith?

❀ Answer

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

I have not found this Hadith in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, nor do I recall it from any other book of Hadith that Sayyidunā Mūsā (AS) supplicated to be made the last prophet or to be granted the last Ummah.

However, in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, within the narration concerning the Mi‘rāj, these words are indeed mentioned:

«فَلَمَّا تَجَاوَزْتُ بَكَى قِيلَ لَهُ مَا يُبْكِيكَ قَالَ أَبْكِي لِأَنَّ غُلَامًا بُعِثَ بَعْدِي يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّنْ يَدْخُلُهَا مِنْ أُمَّتِي»
(Al-Bukhārī with Fatḥ al-Bārī, Vol. 7, p. 202)

Translation:
“When I passed by, Mūsā (AS) wept. He was asked: ‘What makes you weep?’ He replied: ‘I weep because a young man was sent as a prophet after me, and more of his Ummah will enter Paradise than of my Ummah.’”

❀ Conclusion

◈ The attribution to Sayyidunā Mūsā (AS) of a supplication asking to be the last prophet or to be granted the last Ummah is not explicitly found in any well-known Hadith.
◈ However, the Hadith of Mi‘rāj in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī mentions that he wept because the Ummah of the Prophet ﷺ would outnumber his Ummah in Paradise.
