Hadith “Seeking Knowledge is Obligatory Upon Every Muslim” – Scholarly Analysis of Its Chain

Question:


What is the ruling on the chain of narration of the hadith "طلب العلم فريضة على كل مسلم" (“Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim”)?
Is this hadith ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) or ḍaʿīf (weak)?


Answer:


Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!


Among the scholars, there is a difference of opinion regarding the authenticity of this hadith.


◈ Some scholars have declared this hadith to be ḍaʿīf (weak).


◈ In particular, the ḥadīth scholar of this era, Imām Muḥammad Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Albānī (رحمه الله), has included this narration in his famous work al-Silsilah al-Ḍaʿīfah.


◈ In al-Silsilah al-Ḍaʿīfah, this hadith is listed as Hadith no. 1455, where Imām al-Albānī (رحمه الله) graded it as ḍaʿīf (not authentic).
