Question:
What is the ḥadd (legal punishment) for theft in Islam?
Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri
Answer:
If the stolen property reaches the niṣāb (minimum value), the ḥadd punishment for theft is amputation of the hand. The niṣāb is one-quarter of a dīnār or its equivalent value.
Scholarly Consensus:
❀ ʿAllāmah Ibn Mufliḥ رحمه الله (884 AH):
القطع فى السرقة وهو ثابت بالإجماع
“The amputation of the hand for theft is established by consensus.”
(al-Mubdiʿ, 7/428)

- Theft reaching the niṣāb incurs the ḥadd of cutting the hand.
- This ruling is established by Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus.
