Guidelines on Wearing Socks and Marital Rights in Islam

Fatwa: Sheikh Ibn Jubeir حفظ اللہ

Question:

① Is it permissible to wear socks or gloves when going outside, considering modesty, or is it considered an innovation (bid'ah)? Also, is it haram for a stranger to see a woman’s hands if they are not adorned?
② Does either spouse have the right to deny the other their natural rights for an extended period without a valid Shari excuse?

Answer:

① It is obligatory for a woman to wear clothing that covers her body and private parts. Especially when going to the market or public places, it is essential for a woman to be properly veiled. Wearing socks and gloves falls under this requirement. The purpose is to ensure that no part of the woman’s body that could lead to temptation or corruption is exposed. It is permissible to leave the hands uncovered when necessary, provided they are not adorned with jewelry, henna, or any distinguishing features.

② There is no doubt that sexual intimacy between husband and wife is a psychological necessity. Moreover, there may be differences in sexual desire due to varying levels of sexual potency between men and women. Generally, men tend to have a higher sexual drive, leading to greater desire for frequent marital relations. As a result, many women complain about their husbands wanting to engage in sexual activity often, as it can be detrimental for them.

However, abstaining from sexual relations for an extended period is impermissible. It is indeed the woman's right to have her sexual needs fulfilled, and she can only bear patience for a maximum of four months. Thus, spouses should consider each other's desires. If the woman expresses a sexual desire, the man should respect it according to his ability and strength. If difficulties arise, he may choose to abstain. Likewise, the woman should respect her husband’s desires, provided that doing so is not burdensome.
