Suicide: A Sign of Weak Faith and Severe Warning

Some people, instead of bearing worldly hardships and temporary difficulties with patience, choose to end their lives. Such individuals, in reality, do not possess complete faith in Divine Decree (Qadr) and the Hereafter.

Had they truly believed in the punishment mentioned in authentic Hadiths for those who commit suicide, no Muslim would ever be inclined toward this act.

✦ Prophetic Warnings Against Suicide:

Narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever kills himself with a sharp object, that object will remain in his hand, and he will repeatedly stab his stomach with it in the Hellfire eternally. Whoever drinks poison and kills himself will keep pouring it into his body in the Hellfire forever. And whoever jumps off a mountain and kills himself will continue falling in the Hellfire perpetually.”
(Bukhari 5778, Muslim 109)

Narrated by Jundub ibn Abdullah رضي الله عنه:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Among those before you was a man who was wounded. He lost patience and cut his hand with a knife, and he bled until he died. Allah said: ‘My servant hastened his death before My command; I have made Paradise forbidden for him.’”
(Bukhari 3463, Muslim 113)

Narrated by Thabit ibn Dhahhak رضي الله عنه:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Cursing a believer is like killing him. Calling someone a disbeliever is like killing him. And whoever kills himself with any method will be punished with the same method on the Day of Judgment.”
(Bukhari 6652, Muslim 110)

Once, the Prophet ﷺ commented about a man who fought bravely in battle, saying:
“He is from the people of Hell.”
The man, due to the pain of his wounds, committed suicide with his sword.
(Bukhari 2898, Muslim 112)

✦ Instruction Not to Perform Janazah Prayer for Suicide Victims:

Narrated by Jabir ibn Samurah رضي الله عنه:
“A funeral was brought before the Prophet ﷺ for a man who had killed himself with a sharp weapon. The Prophet ﷺ did not offer his funeral prayer.”
(Muslim 978)

❖ Disobedience to Parents: A Major Sin

✦ Clear Command from the Qur’an:

وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ... (Surah Al-Isra 23-24)

“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and be kind to parents. If either or both of them reach old age in your life, do not say to them ‘Uff’, nor scold them, but speak to them graciously. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.’”

✦ Stern Warnings in Hadith:

Narrated by Abu Bakrah رضي الله عنه:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Shall I not tell you the greatest of major sins?”
They said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.”
He said:
① Associating partners with Allah
② Disobedience to parents
③ False speech and false testimony
(Bukhari 2654, Muslim 87)

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr رضي الله عنه:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The pleasure of Allah is in the pleasure of the father, and the displeasure of Allah is in the displeasure of the father.”
(Tirmidhi 1899)

Narrated by Abu Darda رضي الله عنه:
“The father is the best of the gates to Paradise; so safeguard it.”

(Tirmidhi 1900)

Narrated by Mughira ibn Shu’bah رضي الله عنه:
“Indeed, Allah has forbidden you to disobey your mothers, be miserly, beg unnecessarily, and to bury daughters alive. And He dislikes excessive questioning and wasting wealth.”

(Bukhari 2408)

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr رضي الله عنه:
“One who disobeys parents, reminds others of favors he has done, or is addicted to alcohol, will not enter Paradise.”

(Nasa’i 5675)

❖ The Supplication (Du‘a) of Parents

Narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه:
“Three types of supplications are always accepted: the supplication of the oppressed, the traveler, and the parent against his child.”

(Abu Dawood 1536)

Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah رضي الله عنه:
“A man said: I have wealth and children, but my father wants to take from my wealth. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘You and your wealth belong to your father.’”

(Abu Dawood 3530, Ibn Majah 2291)

Cursing or Insulting Parents is a Major Sin

Narrated by Ali رضي الله عنه:
“May the curse of Allah be upon the one who curses his parents.”

(Muslim 1978)

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr رضي الله عنه:
“To insult one's parents is among the major sins.”

(Bukhari 5973, Muslim 90)

Disobedience Permissible Only When It Involves Disobedience to Allah

وَإِن جَاهَدَاكَ... (Surah Luqman 15)
“But if they strive to make you associate with Me something about which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in this world with kindness.”

Narrated by Ali رضي الله عنه:
“There is no obedience in matters that involve disobedience to Allah. Obedience is only in what is right and good.”

(Bukhari 7257, Muslim 1840)

Ascribing Oneself to Someone Other Than One’s Father: A Forbidden and Cursed Act

Narrated by Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas رضي الله عنه:
“Whoever falsely claims lineage to someone other than his father knowingly — Paradise is forbidden for him.”

(Bukhari 4326, Muslim 63)

Narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه:
“Do not turn away from your fathers. Whoever turns away from his father has committed disbelief.”

(Bukhari 6768, Muslim 62)

Narrated by Ali رضي الله عنه:
“Whoever claims lineage to anyone other than his father — upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all of mankind. None of his obligatory or voluntary deeds will be accepted on the Day of Judgment.”

(Bukhari 1870, Muslim 1370)

❖ Withholding Financial Support from Dependents: A Major Sin

Narrated by Khaythamah:
“We were sitting with Abdullah ibn Amr رضي الله عنه when his steward came. He asked: ‘Have you given the servants their provision?’ He replied: ‘No.’ So he said: ‘Go and give them, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: It is sufficient sin for a man that he withholds provision from those he is responsible for.’”

(Muslim 996)

Narrated by Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه:
“A dinar you spend in the cause of Allah, a dinar you spend to free a slave, a dinar you give to a needy person, and a dinar you spend on your family — the greatest reward is for the dinar you spend on your family.”

(Muslim 995)
