Granting Time to Pay Mahr Due to Financial Hardship

❖ Question:​

If a husband is unable to pay the mahr (dower) due to poverty, can he be granted time?

✿ Answer:​

He should be granted time.

❀ The Command of Allah Almighty:

﴿وَإِنْ كَانَ ذُو عُسْرَةٍ فَنَظِرَةٌ إِلَىٰ مَيْسَرَةٍ﴾

Reference: Al-Baqarah: 280

Translation:

“And if the debtor is in hardship, then grant him respite until ease.”
