Giving the Adhan for Performing Salah

Written by: Sheikh Mubashir Ahmed Rabbani (Hafizahullah)

Question:

If a person is offering Salah (prayer) at home, is it necessary to give the Adhan (call to prayer)? If the Adhan is not given, will the prayer still be valid?

Answer:

It is not mandatory to give the Adhan in order to perform Salah. If the prayer is performed in congregation without the Adhan, the prayer will still be valid. However, giving the Adhan is permissible as well, as mentioned in Sahih Bukhari and other sources:

"Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the mosque after the congregation had finished, so he gave the Adhan and Iqamah and performed the prayer in congregation."
[Sahih Bukhari, Book of Adhan: Chapter on the Virtue of Congregational Prayer*]

Additionally, it is reported from Abdullah bin Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he also led the congregation without giving the Adhan and Iqamah, as recorded in Tabarani Al-Kabeer and Kitab al-Athar among others.

There is no evidence in the Quran or Sunnah that makes it obligatory to give the Adhan for congregational prayer, nor that the congregation is invalid without it. The purpose of the Adhan is simply to inform people when prayers are held in the mosque.
