Gifting a Fiancée in Islam and Warning Against Bid‘ah Occasions

Islamic Ruling on Giving Gifts to a Fiancée and Prohibited Occasions
Fatwa by the Saudi Permanent Committee for Islamic Rulings
Fatwa No: 19805

❖ Gifts to a Fiancée: Permissibility and Limitations

Exchanging gifts among people is an action that creates love and affection, removes hatred and resentment from hearts, and is beloved in Shari'ah.

✔ The Prophet ﷺ used to accept gifts and return gifts, and Muslims have consistently practiced this tradition.

📌 However, if a gift is associated with an un-Islamic or innovated occasion, then it is not permissible.

Prohibited Occasions for Gift-Giving Include:

‘Ashura (10th Muharram)
Rajab (for specific innovations)
Birthdays (including Prophet's birthday)

These occasions are considered bid‘ah (innovations), and giving gifts on such days is seen as assisting in falsehood and participating in innovation.

✅ Conclusion:

  • Giving a gift to a fiancée is permissible in general, especially when done within Islamic boundaries and without seclusion or intimacy.
  • Gifts must not be tied to innovated or un-Islamic celebrations.
