Islamic Ruling on Giving Gifts to a Fiancée and Prohibited Occasions
✒ Fatwa by the Saudi Permanent Committee for Islamic Rulings
Fatwa No: 19805
✔ Exchanging gifts among people is an action that creates love and affection, removes hatred and resentment from hearts, and is beloved in Shari'ah.
✔ The Prophet ﷺ used to accept gifts and return gifts, and Muslims have consistently practiced this tradition.
However, if a gift is associated with an un-Islamic or innovated occasion, then it is not permissible.
① ‘Ashura (10th Muharram)
② Rajab (for specific innovations)
③ Birthdays (including Prophet's birthday)
These occasions are considered bid‘ah (innovations), and giving gifts on such days is seen as assisting in falsehood and participating in innovation.
