❀ The Practice of the Prophet ﷺ in the Friday Khutbah
The Prophet ﷺ would frequently recite Sūrah Qāf in his Friday sermons. This consistent practice is clearly illustrated in the narration of Ḥaḍrat Umm Hishām bint Ḥārithah (رضي الله عنها):
ما أخذتُ (ق) إلا عن لسان رسول الله ﷺ، يقرأ بها كلَّ جمعة على المنبر إذا خطب الناس.
“I memorized Sūrah Qāf directly from the tongue of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; he used to recite it every Friday while delivering the khutbah on the pulpit.”
[Muslim: 873 | Kitāb al-Jumuʿah: Bāb Takhfīf al-Ṣalāh wal-Khuṭbah | Nasā’ī: 1411 | Abū Dāwūd: 1100]
❖ Key Points
✔ This practice of the Prophet ﷺ shows the importance of including Qur’anic reminders in the khutbah, and how Sūrah Qāf in particular was preferred due to its powerful content addressing resurrection, accountability, and reflection.
✔ The consistent recitation of this sūrah also made it easier for the companions to memorize and reflect upon its verses.
✔ It also emphasizes that the khutbah is not merely a formality but a means of admonition and Qur’anic instruction.
