"مَنْ غَشَّ، فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي"

"Whoever deceives is not from me."

[Sahih Muslim, Book of Faith: 284]

Key Points:

The background of this Hadith is as follows: Once, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) passed by a pile of grains belonging to a merchant. He inserted his hand into the pile and felt dampness with his fingers. The Prophet (ﷺ) then asked the grain seller, "What is this dampness inside your pile?" The merchant replied, "O Messenger of Allah! Rain droplets fell on the grain, so I placed the damp part underneath." The Prophet (ﷺ) then remarked, "Why did you not leave the damp grain on top so that buyers could see it?" It was at this moment that he uttered the words mentioned in the above Hadith.

Hiding a defect in a product intended for sale is indeed a grave sin. In another Hadith, it is stated that if buyers and sellers speak truthfully and disclose all necessary information, their transaction will be blessed. However, if they lie and conceal the reality, the blessing will be removed from their deal.

[Nasa’i, Book of Sales: 4462]

It is essential for the seller to provide accurate information about the item being sold. If there is any flaw or defect, the buyer must be informed. It is absolutely impermissible for a Muslim trader to sell a defective or substandard item without notifying the buyer. Such conduct is haram (prohibited). Concealing a defect in a sale removes the blessing granted by Allah.

In another Hadith, it is mentioned that if a person sells an item with a defect and does not disclose it to the buyer, the angels continuously curse that person.
