Forgiveness for Those Harboring Hatred and Enmity

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafizahullah)

Question:

Is there forgiveness for someone who harbors hatred and enmity toward others?

Answer:

Narration from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (RA):
He reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«تفتح أبواب الجنة يوم الإثنين ويوم الخميس، فيغفر لكل عبد لا يشرك بالله شيئا، إلا رجلا كانت بينه وبين أخيه شحناء فيقال: أنظروا هذين حتى يصطلحا أنظروا هذين حتى يصطلحا، أنظروا هذين حتى يصطلحا»

"The gates of Paradise are opened on Mondays and Thursdays, and forgiveness is granted to every servant who does not associate anything with Allah, except for the person who harbors enmity with his brother. It will be said: Delay these two until they reconcile. Delay these two until they reconcile. Delay these two until they reconcile."
[Musnad Ahmad 400/2, Hadith No. 9188; Sahih Muslim 1987/4, Hadith No. 2565; Sunan Abu Dawood 279/4, Hadith No. 4916; Al-Adab Al-Mufrad by Bukhari, Hadith No. 411]

Explanation of the Hadith:

The meaning of this Hadith emphasizes that Allah forgives His obedient and devout servants and includes them in His mercy. However, those who harbor intense hatred, disputes, or enmity are deprived of this forgiveness until they reconcile and restore good relations with one another.

When conflicts persist, forgiveness is withheld until individuals resolve their differences and return to amicable behavior. This highlights the importance of brotherhood, reconciliation, and clearing the heart from grudges to attain Allah's forgiveness.

Key Lessons:

  • Maintaining clean hearts and fostering reconciliation is crucial for receiving divine mercy.
  • Persistent enmity between believers can delay or prevent forgiveness.
  • Efforts should be made to resolve conflicts promptly and restore harmony.
Thus, reconciliation is not only a moral virtue but a necessity for spiritual purification and divine acceptance.
