For how many days can a traveler offer Qasr prayer?
Also, please explain the Hadith in which the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The Muhājir should not stay in Makkah for more than three days after completing the rites of Hajj.”
And what about the Hadith from ‘Ā’ishah (رضي الله عنها) which states:
“When the Prophet ﷺ would go on a journey, he continued to perform Qasr until he returned.”
Does this imply that one may continue Qasr for as many days as he wishes while traveling?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, Ammā ba‘d!
✔ If a person is in a state of travel and uncertainty (i.e., tardud — continuously moving without settling), then Sharī‘ah places no limit on how long he may offer Qasr prayer.
✔ However, if the traveler intends to stay in one location, then:
➤ If the stay is for more than four days, continuing Qasr is not established from the Prophet ﷺ.
➤ In such a case, he must perform full (itam) prayers upon arrival.
“The Muhājir should not remain in Makkah for more than three days after completing the rites of Hajj.”
✔ This refers to those who had migrated from Makkah, and for whom permanent residency in Makkah was no longer permissible.
✔ However, they were allowed to stay up to three days after Hajj.
✦ This ruling relates to residence, not to Qasr prayer specifically.
“When the Prophet ﷺ would travel, he would continue to perform Qasr until he returned.”
✔ This Hadith is authentic and well-known.
✔ However, all recorded travels of the Prophet ﷺ show that:
➤ He was either in continuous motion (tardud)
➤ Or he stayed in one place for four days or less
✔ Therefore, the meaning of the Hadith is:
The Prophet ﷺ always performed Qasr while in the state of travel, and he never performed Qasr where he had a firm intention to stay for more than four days.
❖ In a state of travel with no fixed duration (tardud):
✔ No time limit — Qasr remains valid throughout.
❖ If staying in one place with clear intention:
✘ Qasr is not valid if the stay exceeds four days.
✔ Qasr is valid if stay is four days or fewer.
❖ The Hadith of ‘Ā’ishah (رضي الله عنها) supports this principle and does not negate the four-day limit derived from the Prophet’s practice.
✔ Conclusion:
Sharī‘ah grants flexibility during travel, but where a firm intention of staying beyond four days exists, one must perform full prayers. The prophetic practice and clear guidance from the Companions affirm this standard.
