Fatwa by: Sheikh Muhammad bin Saleh al-Uthaymeen
Question:
An Islamic sister asks: Sometimes food particles remain in the teeth. Is it necessary to clean the teeth from these particles before performing wudu (ablution)?
Answer:
In my opinion, it is not necessary to remove food particles from the teeth before wudu. However, undoubtedly, cleaning the teeth from such particles leads to a more complete state of purity and cleanliness. This practice also helps keep the teeth significantly healthier, as leaving food remnants between the teeth can cause decay, leading to dental and gum diseases. Therefore, it is recommended that one thoroughly cleans their teeth after eating to remove all food particles. Additionally, using a miswak is also advised because eating changes the odor of the mouth. Regarding the use of the miswak, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"It purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord."
[Sahih Bukhari]
This Hadith indicates that whenever there is a need for cleaning the mouth, it should be done using a miswak. And Allah knows best.
