Allah Almighty has forbidden following sinful scholars and ignorant worshippers. He has clearly stated in the Qur'an:
"O you who believe! Verily, many of the scholars and monks devour the wealth of people unjustly and hinder them from the way of Allah."
[Surah At-Tawbah, 9:34]
And He also said:
"Say: O People of the Book! Do not exaggerate in your religion beyond the truth, and do not follow the desires of people who went astray before and led many others astray and deviated from the right path."
[Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:77]
Numerous other verses also warn against following sinners and those who have gone astray. Following such people is a path of deviation and misguidance, which was characteristic of the people of ignorance (Jahiliyyah).
This serves as a clear reminder to avoid taking guidance from those who are either sinful scholars or ignorant worshippers, as their path leads away from the true guidance of Allah.
