When those righteous individuals passed away, Shayṭān inspired their people with the idea that they should make statues of them and place them in their gathering places. The people did so. When the generation that made those statues passed away, the later generations began worshipping those images and statues.
From this, it becomes clear that the polytheism of the Arab pagans followed a similar pattern. After the death of righteous individuals, they began to regard them as problem-solvers and fulfillers of needs, and they started offering vows and sacrifices in their names. Otherwise, they too acknowledged Allah alone as the true Creator, as mentioned in Sūrah al-ʿAnkabūt (29:65), where it is stated that when they boarded ships, they would call upon Allah alone sincerely.
The same theme is also mentioned in Sūrah Banī Isrā’īl (17:67).
A detailed discussion of this issue has been presented by the author in his book “Kull Shirk Gū”.
May Allah Almighty grant the Muslim Ummah sincere deliverance from the heinous belief of shirk. Āmīn.

The answer to this question is explicitly found in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī through the statement of Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما. He stated that these were the names of righteous servants from the people of Nūḥ عليه السلام.When those righteous individuals passed away, Shayṭān inspired their people with the idea that they should make statues of them and place them in their gathering places. The people did so. When the generation that made those statues passed away, the later generations began worshipping those images and statues.
