✿ How Much Financial Maintenance Is Obligatory on a Husband? ✿
The Ruling:
Islam has not fixed a specific amount for nafaqah (financial maintenance). The obligation is based on the husband’s financial capacity—whether wealthy or of limited means.
Divine Guidance from the Qur’an:
❀ Allah ﷻ says:
﴿عَلَى الْمُوسِعِ قَدَرُهُ وَعَلَى الْمُقْتِرِ قَدَرُهُ﴾
“Let a man of wealth spend according to his means, and the one whose provision is restricted should spend according to what Allah has given him.”
◈ Key Points:
① No fixed amount is defined in Sharīʿah for spousal maintenance.
② The husband must provide according to his financial strength.
③ The standard varies from person to person depending on wealth or poverty.
④ The obligation includes food, clothing, shelter, and daily essentials in accordance with local customs and societal norms.
