Ruling on the Fast of a Woman Who Miscarries During Pregnancy
❖ Source:
This ruling is derived from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, based on the Fatwas of the Scholars of the Haramain, translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.
Some women undergo miscarriage, and this can occur in two situations:
① The fetus is miscarried before the human form is developed, or
② After the fetus is formed and the human features are apparent.
What is the ruling on the fasts of the day the miscarriage occurs and the days of bleeding that follow?
If the fetus has not been formed yet, then the blood is not considered postnatal bleeding (nifās).
Therefore, the woman will continue to fast and perform prayers, and her fast will be valid.
But if the fetus has been formed, then without a doubt, the blood is nifās, and during such days, it is not permissible for the woman to fast or pray.
The principle in this matter is:
When the blood is nifās, all rulings that apply to a woman in postnatal bleeding will apply to her.
And when the blood is not nifās, then those prohibitions do not apply.
